Ely Among The Guardian’s Top 10 Picks for a City Break
The Cambridgeshire city of Ely has ranked among The Guardian newspaper’s top 10 favourite city break destinations.
Travel expert Phoebe Taplin’s article, which listed destinations rich in culture and with plenty of opportunity for ‘outdoor fun,’ called Ely a ‘holiday idyll.’
She noted its fenland and water meadow surroundings, its two beautiful cathedral towers and the array of riverside establishments perfect for a relaxing drink by the water. The article also suggested using Ely as a ‘quieter’ base for visiting nearby Cambridge, which is a little over half an hour away by car.
Destinations and attractions within Ely to receive a mention included Ely Markets, Phoebe highlighting the fruitcake and local apple juice available there – the latter originating from Pippin Tree Press in Somersham, Huntingdon.
Wicken Fen also made an appearance. The National Trust’s longest-running nature reserve, visitors can observe water lilies, wading birds and even ponies here.
As you’d expect, the Ely Museum and Ely Cathedral were also deemed worth a visit; the former has recently undergone a £2.2m revamp and is packed full of fascinating glimpses of what life used to be like in the city.
Councillor David Ambrose Smith, Chairman of Operational Services Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “It’s wonderful that Ely has been recognised alongside such a diverse list of cities. Ely packs a huge amount of variety into a small area. We’re really proud that The Guardian thinks we’re one of the best places to spend your leisure time in 2021.
“We have a lot to offer, not only as a city, but as a district. Those looking for inspiration should visit the Explore East Cambs website to see the fantastic options available to them.”
Emma Grima, Commercial Director of East Cambs Trading Company – which runs Ely Markets – added: “We’re delighted that Ely Markets has been recognised as a key part of our city’s cultural scene. Every week, we provide food, entertainment and leisure to our residents and visitors.”
